MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
A “Parliamentary Election” formed the business of the weekly meeting of the Lyttelton Literary and Debating Society on Monday evening. There was a good muster of electors, whoso suffrages were sought by four candidates, Messrs J. R. Webb, 0. Kempthorne, H. W. Laing and J. Spiers, each of whom gave a short address and answered questions on matters of political interest. A ballot was taken, and resulted in favour of Mr Webb. It was announced that at the meeting next Thursday Captain Marciel would give a lecture on “The New Far East.”
The thirty-second anniversary social gathering of the Ashburton Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held on Thursday evening, when there was a large attendance of members and their friends.
The fortnightly meeting of the Southbridge Temperance Society, at which there was a large attendance, was held in the Orange Hall on Wednesday evening, the Rev R. W. Jackson presiding. Mr W. Watson, Brooksida, gave an address on “ The Benefits of Total Abstinence and the Dangers Connected with Moderate Drinking.” A song was given by Miss Gates, and recitations by Mias Elsio Shepherd and MrT. Shepherd. Mr T. A. Gates presided at the organ. At a meeting of the New Brighton Band of Hope on Thursday evening there was a good attendance, and the president. Mr R. Bargrove, was in the chair. ' Contributions to a varied programme were given by Misses IS. Wear, M’Kinney, Hanham, Violet Bargrov© and M. Hanham, Mr P. Pattrick, and Masters H, Wear, L. Checkley, H. Hunter and B. Palk. Mr T. Clarkson gave an address on “ Looking on the Bright Side of Things.’’
