BOROUGH COUNCILS.
KAIAPOI. Tlie ordinary meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council “was held on Tuesday evening; present—Tho Mayor (presiding), and Councillors Bugg, Parnham, Eagle, Keetly, Sullivan, Bate, Midgloy and Blackwell, The Lighting Committee recommended the erection of an extra lamp near the approach to the east end of Mafeking Bridge. The recommendation was adopted. Tho surveyor’s report was read and adopted. Tho Finance Committee reported—Receipts £176 14s, debit £240 14s 6d, and recommended, accounts to £27 4s lOd for payment. ■ A deputation from the Fire Brigade attended, and stated that :he finances of the Brigade >fould not allow tho expenditure necessary to pay off its liabilities. The deputation asked if the Council would give an an- • nual grant of £ls or £2O, as the present grant of .£5 was madequate. Councillor " Eagle said that the Brigade’s request was reasonable, and should, if possible, be complied with. Tho Works Committee was instructed to attend to repairs to tho embankment at the junction of Charles and Smith Streets. The Council, sitting as the Domain Board, received the resignation or Mr J. Atkinson, caretaker, and appointed Mr M’Aleer to fill the vacancy. ASHBURTON. The Borough Council met on Monday. the Mayor presiding. The Mayor reported a credit balance at tho bank of £24 12s Gd. The receipts since last meeting were £lB5 7s 9d. It was decided to write to the County Council protesting strongly against the proposed closing of a road leading to the beach at Wakanui. The report oj the Lighting Committee, recommending the erection of four new street lamps, was’ adopted after lengthy discussion. The Reserve Committee’s report, commending that a Glasgow lease of Reserve 721 should be offered by auction on July 8 at an upset rental of £2O per annum for the first so veil years and £3O per annum for the second seven years, and £4O per annum ior balance of a twenty-one years term, was adopted, fine hire Bngaae Committee’s report, _ recommending wider publicity being given to the system of tolls denoting the distncu in ' which a fire alarm is given and alteration of tho hook-and-ladue-r appliance so as to fit it for attachment to tho curricle engine, was adopted. Mr H. D. Acland, of Messrs Wilding, Lewis and Acland,, was appointed borough solicitor. Accounts for £oß< Is 7d were passed for payment, ” The Council then, sat as a Domain Board. Tho Mayor was authorised to call a meeting of ratepayers on receipt of a request from a reasonable number of ratepayers, for the purpose of discussing* ways and means of erecting a D.r.vilicn in tho Don’MM
