THE SALVATION ARMY AT SYDENHAM.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I ■ notice in your report of the City Council’s meeting ,on Monday evening among the correspondence re- ■ ceivod is a complaint from Mr A. J. Lawrence, of the Club Hotel, Sydenham, of the intolerable nuisance caused by the Salvation Army on several , nights in the week, Saturday nights ; especially, outside of his premises."Mr , Lawrence is not the only sufferer from V one hour to oue hour and a half every . Saturday night. Within six shops either side of Lawrence’s hotel it ’is almost impossible to hear oneself ■■ speak. ‘ Why is such a nuisance allowed in Sydenham ? The same nuisance would not be tolerated for .one night' in Christchurch. There is both an unwarrantable obstruction to ilm , main thoroughfare and a deafening noise the whole time, enough to distract any. person with ordinary nerves; It is high’ time the police or the proper authorities took action and had this intoler--j able nuisance suppressed. My sympatliy is entirely with Mr Lawrence; ' and I am greatly surprised that he haiJ - put up with the nuisance so dong without complaining.—l am, etc., MERCER '
