AUSTRALIAN MAILS.
THE DISPUTE SETTLED. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, April 4. The mail dispute has'been settled. Subject to the approval of Parliament the Cabinet has agreed to pay the Orient Company a subsidy of £120,000 a year. (Received 1 April 5, 1.17 a.m.) Besides the Orient Company’s offer the Cabinet discussed an offer from Messrs Scott, Fell and Co., which was considered unsuitable. It is probable that a weekly service will be resumed before the end of the month, and if Parliament fails to ratify the new contract the old conditions will be reverted to. The arrangement is likely to meet with considerable opposition on the ground that the amount is excessive, the Labour Party and a section of the general Opposition being strongly hostile to any contract above £IIO,OOO. The Postmaster-General declines to give details of the contract or state if any new conditions are involved. . '
