HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARDS.

ELECTION" OF MEMBERS. THE CITY COUNCIL'S DELEGATES. A special meeting of the City Council ■was held last evening to elect four members of the Hospital Board, four members of the Charitable Aid Board and a trustee of the Samaritan Home. There were present—The Mayor (Mr C. M. Gray) and Councillors W. H. Cooper, E. W. Samuels, W. G. Atack, H. Pearce B. P. Manhire, G. W. J. Parsons, J. Hadfield, IV. J. Neate, H. B. Sorensen, H. J. Otley and G. Payiing. Apologies were received from Councillors, A. Carey, J. Forrester and H. H. Lough nan. Letters were read from the’ Progressive Liberal Association, the Canterbury Women’s Institute, and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, recommending the appointment of candidates, those recommended being Mrs Wells, Mrs Page, Mrs Henderson and Mrs Williamson. Several of the letters dwelt upon the advisablenees of electing lady candidates, and set forth their qualifications. Mrs Wells forwarded a lengthy statement containing a report of the current year of some of the work done by the Charitable Aid Board on her initiation. The Mayor said that every year the meetings were growing in importance, in accordance with the growth of the problems in connection witli charitable aid and hospital management. The meetings were tlie only opportunity offered during the year to review the actions of the Council’s representatives on the Boards, or of discussing questions of policy involved' in the management. Previously the election of representatives had been on personal considerations rather than on considerations or policy. It was doubtful whether they should consider matters of policy or not. He had never sat on the Charitable Aid Board and did nob profess to have very much knowledge* of the working of the Board. As was Mien the case in connection with bodies of that nature, however, there seemed to be two parties, a party .which believed that whatever was was right, and a party which believed in reform. He wae not going to offer an opinion on the- subject, as ho had no means of ascertaining which party was right. No doubt Councillors had been ■well canvassed by candidates for positions on the Board, and ho assumed that they had formed their own opinions as to whom they ought to vote for. In reply to Councillor Neate, the Mayor repeated the names of the lady candidates. Councillor Pearce: Who is Mrs "Williamson? The MaVor; The Town Clerk has jnst read a long letter setting forth what airs Williamson has done, especially in Wanganui. . , The following representatives were elected;—To the Hospital Board, Councillors Payiing, Loughnan, Hatfield --'-'' LL sen; to the Board, _ Mrs Henderson, Mrs .Wells, and Councillors Cooper and Samuels. In nominating Mrs Henderson. Councillor Pearce said that she had had a year s /experience on the Board, and the manner in which she carried out her duties entitled her to re-election. Councillor Neate, who nominated Mrs Wells, said that the same remarks applied to_ her, only to a greater..degree, a>s-she had served on the Board for a longer time.. She had made .an excellent record for herself. After the result of the election had been announced, Councillor Sorensen said that the lady members just elected were active workers in charitable aid matters, and two better members could not be placed on the Board. Tbs ladies would do as good work as it was possible for any gentleman to do. Thev had more time than most gentlemen could afford for the purpose, and they did specially effective work in visiting" children and women. Councillor Cooper said that ho could say from his experience on the Board that there were no better members than the lady members. Ha did 'not. care what certain members of the Board said. As far as economy went, they could not be surpassed. Even if the Board had spent a few extra pounds in charitable aid. it had gone in the right channel. He was glad that lady candidates had been elected. At the annual meeting of the Selwyn County Council yesterday, there were present Messrs W. Dunlop (chairman), J. Wolfe G. Rutherford, G. Witty, M.H.F.., R. H.’Rhodes, M.H.R., G. Scott and W. M'Millan. After some preliminary business the Council proceeded to elect" representatives on the Hospital Board and Charitable Aid- Board. The chairman said that ha thought the Council should elect its own members. On the motion of Mr Witty, seconded by Mr Rutherford, the chairman and Messrs M’Millan, Wolfe and Scott were elected to represent the Council on the Hospital Board. ■ A vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Black and Mr F. J. Board for their services on the Charitable Aid Board as the Council's delegate®. Mr Rutherford l said l that h") would like to see* a lady appointed, but he thought the other degelates should be members of the Council. Mrs Black, and Mosers Board, M'Millan, Woife and Scott were nominated for seats on the Charitable ' Aid Board, and a ballot, resulted! In the election of Mrs Black, and Messrs Scott, Al’Atillan and Wolfe. Mr Board was elected to represent the Council 'as a Samaritan Home trustee!, j Mi- Witty moved that /the Council should express the opinion' that in the future members of the Hospital Board and. Charitable Aid Board should bo elected by the people. Mr ("tough said that there woul<J. be only ladies elected. The colony hlad not arrived, at such a. socialistic stage as that. Th© motion was not eeoonded. The combined districts of Woolston, Linwood. Sumner and New Brighton elected. Mr e E. Feldwick to the Hospital Board and Mr "W. Radcliff© to the Charitable Aid Board.
