THE TRAMWAYS.
CLOSING OF'HIGH STREET. The town clerk has received tho following letter from Mr F. H. Chamberlain, engineer to the Tramway Board: —“Dear Sir, —In the interest of public safety the Board proposes to close High Street in sections during the construction of the double track, which will be commenced at tile lather end of this week. It is proposed to close the street in! the following manner:—The first section, would be from Fitzgerald Avenue to Barbadoes Street. The work would commence at the avenue, and as soon as the first, six chains are completed and ready for the resumption of traffic the excavation would be carried on to St Asaph Street. When the line is' completed to Barbadoes Street tho excavation would be carried to Tuam Street. When the completed work reaches St Asaph Street tho excavation would be continued from Tuam Street to the, intersection of Manchester Street. When the section to Tuam Street is ready for traffic the work will be continued to Cashel Street. When Lichfield Street is reached with the completed work the excavation will be continued to Hereford Street. Arrangements will bo made for properly-con-structed driveways across the construction of all intersecting streets. It will be impossible to give the exact time that each section will be closed, bnt the whole should be completed in five weeks.”
Tho Sumner trams will come into the city this morning by the new line along Fitzgerald Avenue, Moodiou&a Avenue and Colombo Street.
