Taieri, who arrived at Wellington from the south on Tuesday, will make a trip to the West Coast and back as a passenger in the Mapourika, after which it is understood he is to take over the command of the vessel. Mr M’Queen (the Wellington “ Post ” •tates) has received orders to join the Taieri as second officer, in place of- Mr Tate, who has come ashore to await instructions. The “ Post” says that an effort is to be made to get the New Zealand Shipping Com-pany’s-steamer Turakina away from Wellington for .Lyttelton to-day. / The harbourmaster at Westport reported to last week’s meeting of the Westport Harbour ■Board that for September the bar averaged ,24ft 2in springs and neaps, and the river 21ft ,llin springs and neaps. Shipping—lnward: steam, 84, 36,600 registered tons; outward; '•team 83,-sail one, 39,062 tons. October— Depth on bar, springs and neaps, was 24ft Tin; in river 20ft 6in. Shipping—lnward; 77 steam, one sail, ■ 40,484 tons; outwards; 78 steam, 37,232 tons. This month ths weather had been very unsettled. Several strong low water currents improved the river, but were of no use to the bar, as the heavy" sea stopped the sand going out. The sand dredge has been unable to work, owing to bad weather. There was 6ft to Bft more than the gauge outside the west breakwater. The harbourmaster at Greymouth reported to the Grey Harbour Board last week that the bar at the port had continued in good condition during the past fortnight. The average depth of water on the bar was 22ft 6in and in the river 20fl. Mr W. H. Hely, has been appointed chief officer of the s.s. Whangape, in place of Mr M'Kenzie, who comes ashore for orders. The new s.s. Queen Helena, whose long passage from New York excited some comment, arrived at Melbourne on November 11. She left New York on September 4, and is to come to Auckland and other New Zealand ports. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s s.s. Ruapehu, which loft Plymouth for this colony on November 7, has 207 passengers on board. An exchange states that the s.s. Cape Breton has been chartered to lead at New York for Australian and New Zealand ports. The Auckland ” Star ” of November 19, two. days after the barque Kinclune went ashore on the Rangatira beach at Kaipara, stated that the vessel had a strong list senward; and that seas were breaking over her at high water. . The departure of the s.s. Pukaki for Greymouth has been postponed till this afternoon. Ths s-«- Cygnet arrived iroxn XRuw. v tie i
Bays, at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. She is to leave for Kaikoura and Cheviot tins e T“ Punedin Yesterday ths s.s. Talune left for V u ? e i l ?,l at i p.m., the s.s. Rimu for Wanganui at -35 p.m., P and the s.s. Corinthio for Gisborne and 4 from Newcastle, anchored in the stream at 10.20 a.m. ycsiterday fche was passed by the health officer, Dr Upham, and berthed at No. 6 wharf at hidf-past twelve. The steamer had an uneventful passage from Newcastle. She left Newcastle at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16, and experienced strong south to south-west winds and high sea till she reached Stephens Island, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday last. ihence to arrival she had fair to "light winds and smooth seas. On Friday last a storm of Blunder and lightning, wilh very heavy ram, was encountered. The Brisbane bungs a cargo of 1100 tons of ooal. The Rotomabana left for Wellington at 6.20 last evening, the Baden Powell for Cheviot and Kaikoura at .6.40, the Mokoia for Sydney, via east coast ports, at 8.40, and the Wakatu for Stonyhurst, Kaikoura and "Wellington at 10.40. , , , , T , The s.s. Brisbane is expected to leave Lyttelton on Saturday for Kaipara, to load tunbef for Melbourne. The barquentine St Kilda, which recently reached Auckland from Newcastle, and which ia now undergoing general overhaul, has been bold by her owners at Gisborne, to Messrs G. T. Nlocol, of Auckland, and .Stewart Bros., of Helensvillo. The vessel (says the Now Zealand Herald ”) will he placed on the trade between the Northern Wairoa and the south shortly, taking the place of the three-masted schooner Lark, after fulfilling her charter from the Thames to Sydney. . The Sarah and Mary is still lying capsized on the Mangere beach, opposite the Onehunga wharf (says the Auckland “ HcraM ’ of November 17), where she presents an appearance not unlike that of a stranded whale. Prior to the brigantine capsizing the crew had "brought, all their belongings on deck to "dry, and when she heeled over they lost everything. It now transpires that, after bumping over the middle bank into the south channel, Capain Smith partly repaired the broken steering gear, and had the vessel well under control before asking to bo taken in tow by tbe Rarawa, which latter was standing by to render any assistance, as recognised by all nautical authorities. _ Great credit is due to Captain Smith for his able seamanship under almost impossible conditions, and for saving the vessel and crew out of a most perilous position. If it had not been for his advice, in all probability the men would have taken to the boats, and with no possible hope of reaching safety. Much sympathy is fell for the captain in his misfortune, and the men, at losing all their belongings. It is expected an attempt will bo made to remove the clay ballast and right the Sarah and Mary as soon as the weather takes up. TELEGRAPH NOTICE BOARD. LYTTELTON, November 23.
