THE SYDNEY CARNIVAL.

Ellegaard and Butt have so far failed to win any cycling event at the Sydney carnival. A match is being arranged with Megson and D. Walker for the championship of Australia. (Thorwald Ellegaard. and Walter Rutt are the two riders who have been specially engaged by the Sydney Summer Nights’ Amusement Company to appear at the various cycling carnivals in, the Comrnpnwealth during the present season. Elleguard has a world-wide reputation as a sprinter, and he gained tho world’s sprint championship thrice in succession—at Berlin in 1901, Rome in 1902, and Copenhagei in 1903. At the recent world’s champion* sliips, at Crystal Palace, he was dispossess ed of the title by Ivor Lawson, the American rider, who visited Australia last season, and who is likely to do so again tbig year. Ellegaard and Rutt only arrived in Australia at the latter end of last month, and their non-success is doubtless due to tbs fact that they have not yet struck form. Rutt, who is Ellegaard’s team-mate, rod* prominently and with a good deal of success during the lost European racing season. In connection with the ability of Rutt to visit Australia this year, it may be noted that he was due to serve in the German army from the beginning of last October, but an appeal was made to the Kaiser oa his behalf to have tihe commencement ol his term of conscription postponed till next year, and apparently successfully so. The Commonwealth racing tour of the two riders will extend over four months. Ellegoard receives, in addition to travelling expenses, £BOO and all tihe prizes he may win.) LEAGUE OF WHEELMEN. The Council of the League of New Zealand Wheelmen met last evening; preasajt —Messrs A. C. Duff (chairman), E. H. James, D. E. Wood, J. E. Boyd, J. Barker and E. Nordon (secretary). , Letters were read from the Canterbury. Athletic and Cycling Club and the Christchurch Cycling Club, covering applications in each case for permission to hold amateur raced; for the Council's Rudge-Whitworth Cup. After some discussion it was decided that the question of allotting the Cup should, be held over. _' ' An application for affiliation, from, the Clifton Cycling Club (Bulls) was referred to. the Monawatu Centre for consideration. , , i The action of the South Canterbury Centre in removing the suspension of W.„ Sutherland was approved. ' The New South Wales Cyclists’ Union' wrote offering to donate a sum of £5 towards the expenses of a New Zealand representative at the New South Wales championships on November 19. The secretary wae instructed to reply that want of time before the meeting would prevent the Council’s selecting a representative. - An application from the Mangatainok* Athletic Club for information regarding, affiliation was referred to the ManawatuCentre. • -r
