THE VOLUNTEERS.
A parade of the No. 2 Battalion of North Canterbury Infantry -was held on Wednesday evening. Major C. J. Smith was in command, and Captain and Adjutant Drayton was also ' present. The following corps were on parade :—Sydenham Rides (Captain Ball), Linwood Rifles (Captain Meddings), Civil Service Rifles (Lieutenant Pavitt), Highland Rifles (Captain Stewart), Native Rifles (Lieutenant Bourdot) and a detachment from the Bearer Corps, under SergeantMajor Finlayson. The corps assembled at the drill grounds, and the battalion marched to Cranmer Square, where Major Smith plained that, owing to the rain which had fallen, he did not intend to carry out the programme that had been arranged for tn© evening, namely, attack practice in Haglcy Park. He, however, would hand over* th© companies to their commanders, who would exercise the men on the roads for a. short time, after which the battalion woiud reassemble. This order was given effect 10, and an interesting half-hour’s work was gone through, after which the companies marched bach to the drill grounds, where they were dismissed. The members of the Linwood Rifles have completed a series of Morris-tube cqmpetiona, with the following result Private C 1 eland 136, first nrize ; Lance-Corporal Cooke 136, second prize -, Private T. Jawr 135, third prize; Sergeant Williamson 135, fourth prize; Private Linasay 105,- fifth prize : Private Brightmore 135, sixth prize. The tirophv for the highest aggregate on the target was won-by Private T. Jaca, with three 34’s and two 3os. aird the recruits prize was secured by Private J. Jack, a brother of the well-known marksmen of that name, who recently returned from South Africa, after serving in the war with the South African Light Horse To-day a rifle match will be fired at Lyttelton between teams representing the Lvttelton Navals and the Linwood: Rifletk ' the parade of No. 7 Company Garnson Artillery, Volunteers (N Battery) at Lyttelton, on Wednesday night, there was a- muster of fifty-two of all ranks, under Captain Bricc and Lieutenants Wardle and Clibborn. One detachment was drilled on the 64-pounder, another on the Nordenfeldt and a third on' a Maxim gun. The rangefinders were put through preliminary work for their examination. A detachment will parade on Saturday afternoon for practice with the Maxim gun. ■ , ~ At the Non-commissioned Officers Chio s meeting, on Tuesday evening, in_the Qycl« Corps’ orderly-room, Lieutenant King, ofth« Linwood Rifles, gave an interesting address to the members of the club on * Shooting. The lecturer divided marksmanship into two main branches, the one pertaining to military shooting pure and simple, that is, the class of wort required in the field, and the other to competitive target practice, the recreative and scientific phase of nfls shooting. At the conclusion of the address, a vote of thanks was passed to Lieutenant King, and a general meeting of-the club followed. Routine business was transacted, and the president, Sergeant-Major Farthing, informed members that donations aggregate ing £l4 had already been received towards the cost of "furnishing the club’s room m the now Drillshed building. The Studholtne Mounted Rifles, which has been for'son}© rears the best shooting corps among the South Canterbury mounted rifle companies, maintained its reputation by winning the Ranfurly Challenge at T«* muka oh Monday. The hits made were# Studholme 250, Ashburton 226 t South Canterbury 181, Mackenzie 143. Btudholma also gained most points for “style.” The Ashburton Guards purpose sending a- team to compete at the military sports to be held at Oaanaru shortly.
