THE SLOCUM DISASTER.
DISMISSAL OF INSPECTORS. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, October 18; President Roosevelt has dismissed the chief steamboat inspectors responsible for the General Slocum disaster. (On June 15, the General Slocum, an excursion steamer, carrying about 1300 Gorman people, adults and children, connected with a New York German church, took fire, and made for the Brothers Island, where she was run ashore. About 1000 of the passengers were either drowned or burnt to death. A Government inquiry was ordered, at which it was found that the General Slocum’s lifebelts were not buoyant, her lifeboats were fastened down, the firehose burst as soon as it was used, and the pumps refused to work. The Government steamboat inspectors were accused of negligence, and -bribery was suspected.)
