[Per Press Association.] ' , AVELLINGTON, January 22. t Rain .threatened from cxir’iy morning, and though iiil rjoca a light drizzle fell at ihe Hutt, it xvent oft - before the first race started, and the Wellington Ra-cin-g Club enjoyed a beautiful afternoon for the oceiiing of its summer meeting. There was an excellent attendance, estimated at fully 6000. It included Sir Joseph AVard, the Hen Colonel Pitt and Lieulen-ant-Golonel M'Ccy, the latter being -a uiember of the Federal Assembly in Aus° tralia. A oa-pita-1 afternoon’s sport Was provided, tho Cup, of course, creating the greatest interest. In tlxi-s event Canteen failed to justify tha confidence of his- parly, and was ‘beaten -after half the journey, and when ha died -out of tno struggle it appeared as if ho interfered with C&imio duel, but 'the latter’s rider expresses an opinion that- the little hump ho got was purely accidental. In any case, it is doubtful whether Oaanio Chid, with every advantage of a free run, could have -lived with Gladsome in the final run home. Mr Reid’s filly emulated her recent performance in Auckland, coming away from the home turn and romping in lengths ahead of Convoy. Tho time put up is a new record for the colonies. These connected with tho filly were heartily cheered when she returned to scale. In the Wc-lle-slcy Stakes Mr 'Stead’s colt Silkworm -simply galloped -away from his two 'opponents, and wen in a ridiculously easy manner. Speculation.- was fairly brisk, the sum of £13,701 going through the totalizator, as against £13.937, for the first day last year. De la. Roy last. Entering the back stretch -Gladsome had improved her position and was lying about a couple of lengths from Cannie Ohiel, while Cantoe-w was -being ridden hard to keep his position. Opposite the stand Convoy ranup to Cannie Ohiel. -and this pair carried on the running round the bend into the straight, with -Gladsome third, Float fourth and Capteen -dying away. Once tho field turned for home Convoy’s victory was loudly proclaimed, but outside the distance Gladsome came with a. great rattle, and settling the loaders without iapparent effort, won easily by three or four lengths, with Cannie Ohiel close up and Oho-ork-a beaten by a. neck for third place.
