YACHT HACKS. live vachfc races in connection with the Lyttelton regatta were got off on Saturday aftcrnooif, when there was a sou’-west breeze, which was more acceptable to th© competing' craft than to th© few spectators. The Lyttelton Marino Band played some pleasing selections. Th© races were sailed under conditions which, on the whole, were favourable, though the wind was variable in force, if not in direction. Th© Lyttelton boat secured the prize in the first-class yacht race, and the win-was popular, though the victory of either th© Wellington or the Dunedin representative would have been recognised as a fitting reward of the sportsmanlike spirit which prompted them to compete. For the same reason the win of the Auckland boat Viking in, the eecond-class yacht race was popular. The following are the results of th© races :—■ YACHT RACE (first-class), for yachts 30ft linear rating and over; fifteen miles; first prize £SO, second £l3—lviaora (,T. H. Collins), 33.3 linear rating, 12min osec, 1; Waitangi (Gfcortrcson and Co.), 13.7 linear rating,_ sor, 2. Roma (Crow and Hazlett), 30.2 linear rating, 18min 7scc, also started. Kiaora had the best of the start, and she and the Waitangi rapidly drew away from the Roma. _ In the first round the Wellington yacht gained slightly on the Lyttelton boat, ai\d at the finish of the round was 28seo behind her. Waitangi ilierx made * a short tack for the i reef buoy and gained the lead, rounding the buoy 2Gsec before the Lyttelton boat. Roma went round the buoy 15mm after Kiaora. Waitangi increased her advantage on the second round, and finished it 2min ahead of Kiaora. Both yachts made a short tack for the reef buoy, and Kiaora gained about 50sec in so doing. Roma finished the second round IGmin behind. In running down to Camp Bay on the last round the Lyttelton boat picked up about llsec. In heating up on the return the Wellington yacht regained a little, and Crossed the line limn ISsec ahead of her rival. Kiaora, however, iron on her time allowance by lOmin -17seo. Onawe led throughout, the others following with varying fortune. In finishing the first round Zephyr was in second place, with Viking third and the Dunedin boat Waitiri last.. They crossed the lino in the same order, the time when they finished being as follows; Onawe. 4hr Imin oOseo p.m.; Zephyr, -hr 3min 20seo"p.m.; Viking, 4hr 4min losecp.m.; Waitiri, 4hr 6min 40seo p.m. Viking won on her allowance hy Smin osec from Onawe, Bmin 35seo from Zephyr, and 2Ssea from Waitiri. YACHT RACE HANDICAP, for yachts under 22ft water-line;• ton miles; first prize £l2, second £6, third £4; twelve entries—Swallow (G-. W. Wearon), 9min 30sec, and Heresy (G-. Andrews), IGmin, dead heat; Meteor (E. Sinclair), 17min 30seo, 3. The Dunedin yacht Eileen led from the start till near the finish, when Swallow took the lead and crossed the line first, with Eileen second and Waterwitoh third.
