Mr John Mundell, chief auctioneer for the South Canterbury Farmers' Association, left Timaru yesterday on a trip to England. A large gathering of representatives of commercial and agricultural; interests entertained him.at a,banquet on Wednesday evening. ' Dr Withers and the Rev J. Gal wey arrived from Wellington by the s.s. Rotomahana yesterday morning. Mr W. Devenish Meares,' general manager for New Zealand of the Alliance Assurance Company, left Christckurch yesterday on a visit to England. He will travel by the Athenic, which sails from Wellington, today. '' ■ '— -

The R-ev G. Barclay, who.laid the foundation stone of the Chalmers Presbyterian Church at Timaru yesterday, was the first Presbyterian minister in Timaru. He laid the foundation stone of the earliest church. .between thirty and forty years ago ,'4!and assisted Sir Edward Stafford to lay: that of the present Trinity Church about twentyseven years ago.
