EDUCATION BOARD.

SOUTH CANTERBURY. The South Canterbury Board of Educ*« '■ tion met yesterday. The Chairman reported that; fifty-six committees had been elected, two had not reported and fourteen had reported failure to elect.. Steps for a. second ft election would be taken. The Board cor? dially approved the Department's, circularrecommending a formal recognition of "Empire Day " by the schools, and will request' the committees to do what they can to give effect to the circular. Notice was received of a grant of £125 for teachers' and pupil teachers' classes, and of £BOO for a tech-. meal school building at Wainaate. As' only' £IOOO had been granted"for' a, building at Timaru, where there is so much larger a population, it was resolved to press for a larger grant. The Chairman of the Belikld - Committee waited on the Board to urge the shifting of the school to a site more-' convenient to the great majority of the children. It was resolved to invite tenders for the work, and give notice of resumption of a portion of a school reserve now leased as a site. The Wanganui Board wrote requesting the Board to give permission to Mr J. A. Johnson, headmaster Timaru Main School, to give a course of lectures to teachers in Wanganui at the end ct June. As this period may be made to co incide with the winter holidays, the reque? ■ was favourably received.
