PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL ASSOCIATION.
The committee of the Progressive Lib- , tral Association met on Monday. letters from the Premier were read, in which it •was promised that the Municipal Corporations Act would be amended in the direction of increasing the number of councillors' in populous boroughs. A petition to the Governor, promoted by the Trades Council, relative to the position of Civil servants, with respect to their holding office in political organisations, and pray- i dng that the regulations may be amended 1 : so that the Civil servants may exercise 1 their rights as citizens, by joining in the ' work of such Associations'—came before the committee. The signing of the petition was deferred until more information ; was available. The following resolution - was carried-: —“That this Association < strongly urges upon the Government the • desirability of refusing to grant any leases for coid mining purposes, in the Broken River country, until a comprehensive survey has been made by the Government, with a view to ascertain the extent and E quality of the coal deposit on the Crown t ■ lands,* as yet nnlet for mining purposes; c and the Association further urges that in c the event of such survey showing a suffi- <; ; cient deposit of good quality, the Govern- j went should obtain the authority of Par- j 3iament to work it as a State mine.” Ar- c rangoments were made for the 'social to bo 1 iela on June 8.
