THE DOUKHOBORS.
A FRESH PILGRIMAGE FORBIDDEN. United Press Association—By Eiectrio TelegTa/pfc—Copyright.
OTTAWA, May 6.
The authorities at Saskatchewan have rigorously suppressed an attempt to organise a. Doukhobor pilgrimage, similar to last winter's. The leaders were arrested and the pilgrims sent back to their reservations. (The Doukhobors were first heard of in tho middle of the 18th century. They long endured cruel persecution in the Caucasus at the hands of. the Russian. Government. Eventually they emigrated to Canada, where they were granted land in the provinces of Asshiiboia. The Doukhobors refused to use animals as beasts of burden, and they also would not eat meat of anykind. They were reduced to a state of hopeless destitution last whiter. Their pilgrimage through British Columbia created a great deal of interest at the time, and was only stopped when they were in very sore straits.)
