GERMANY-AND CANADA.
THE TARIFF WAK. United Press Association—By Electrio 'xelegTaph—Copyright. BERLIN, April 22. Tha German newspapers (ire increasingly irritated at the surcharge, and threaten retaliation with a- 50 per cent tax on Canada's corn exports to Germany. Boasts also are mad* that Germany can evade the surtax by exporting through German middlemen residing in England. CONCERN IN GERMANY. DREAD OF THE IMPERIALISTIC IDEA. (Received April 23, 11.53 p.m.) BERLIN, April 23.
The beet growers of Germany and the exporters 'of sugar apprehend irreparable loss unless the Canadian surtax is'lowered. The "Deutsche Taiges Zeitung," in pessimistic articles declares that Mr Chamberlain's policy of drawing the colonies into a commercial union will fail or succeed ac-
cording to the strength or ■weakness of Germany's retaliation on Canada. The "Boersen Zeitrrag" fears that commercial relations between Britain and Germany will be impaired, and adds that the Imperialistic idea in England, wherewith Mr Chamberlain infected the colonies, is likely to grow.
