OBITUARY.

MR BENJAMIN JEFFS. The late Mr Benjamin Jeffs, who died at the Hospital , on Thursday, from, the result of an accident, was one of the. Canterbury pilgrims. He arrived at Lyttelton on the Charlotte Jane, one of the first- four ships, ills first occupation in the colony was to superintend the serving out of fresh water to tho immigrants at Lyttelton, and his first habitation on - the plains consisted of a hole dug out of a- bank of tho Avon, covered over with grass and fern. Later on he went to' Kaiapoi, and built Sneyds Arms Hotel, which is still standing, being used as a private dwelling-house. 'I ho latter part of his life was spent in travelling! in different parts of the colong doing odd jobs'in the way of road making-and fencing, and such like. Even on the day of his death he was working like a young man; He was present in Christchurch at the Canterbury Jubilee festivities. Excepting for accidents, Mr Jett’s never had a day’s illness. -He ires always a man to look on the cheerful side of life, and willing to assist others, and many -will miss him. His wife predeceased him some ten years a,go. He leaves a family of seven sous and four daughters. His remains were interred on Sunday, at the Linwood Cemetery, where his wife is buried.
