The German Press is irritated over the statements which Admiral Dewey was recently reported to have made. Admiral Dewey has explained to President- Roosevelt that ho did not intenj to say anything which could be construed into am offence, and did not expect his off-hand comments to be •published. An influential and representative committee is being formed to investigate tho charges made against General Macdonald, with a vtcw of disproving them. . Tho Federal premier repudiates -the suggestion that Kanakas deported from Queensland trill be killed and eaten.' Every precaution will bo taken, and if theta is any danger if Kanakas are returned to one particular island they will bo taken to- another. Owing .to tho slackness of work at tho Woolwich. Arsenal, one thousand men nro under Igng notice of discharge. Many are emigrating to Canada-. Mr Brodrick, replying to a question in the House of Commons, said the Government was better able than private contractors to lay, idle a portion «f its factories. Moreover, unless contractors were encouraged in peace time, they would l be unable to establish the. necessary plant for expansion of orders in war time. Many Boers, disgusted with the tyranny of the. Officials in German territory, are returning to Cape Colony. General Macdonald was buried at. dawn yesterday at tho Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh. Only eighty spectators were present.
