THE SYDNEY CARNIVAL. 'United Press Association—By Electric , TelegTiarph—Oopyrig!h t. SYDNEY, Jan. 3. The cycling carnival was opened in fine weather. The fame of the world's champion', Major Taylor, and the expected contests between him and D. Walker were responsible for an attendance estimated at twenty-five thousand. Taylor made his debut in the fourth heat of the Wyallong Handicap, starting five yards behind scratch, but he only managed to get.third to M'Lean with 55yds and Drinkwater -60yds start, beating Wilkseb and several other first class men. The champion had the misfortune to slip a. pedal just before the finislv but came home with a magnificent sprint. The final resulted: Walker, scr, 1; Goodson, 25yds, 2; Boidi, 40yds, 3. The winner was blocked to the last lap, but came' through with a. rush, and won by nearly two lengths. * Time-r----57 3-ssec. The Quarter-mile International Championship brought out most of the cracks, including Chalmers, who won his heat in 33sec. In the semi-finals Taylor covered the distance in 30 3-ssec, and' Walker ini 31sec respectively. The final resulted:— Taylor 1, Walker 2, Lewis 3. Taylor went to the front followed by Walker. The pahwatched each other. Lewis shot to the front, and Taylor and! Walker went in pur-s suit, and leaving Lewis behind, made a great finish, Taylor winning by a clear length. Time—32 2-ssec. -\\. ' The Walker Plate, .of five miles, produced another splendid finish, Walker winning by half.'.a wheel from Goodson, with Mutlow third. Taylor, who was blocked, came fourth. Time—llmin 23sec.
