PLOTS AGAINST ROOSEVELDT.
SINGULAR DISCLOSURES. A New York correspondent writes to the "Argus":—Our active and earnest President does not like to be attended by guards, but lie submits to the judgment of others as to the need of such protection. It was a very faithful guard, Mr Craig, who was sitting by his side iu a carriage at Pittsfield, and was killed by that collision with a street car which threw the President himself a distance of 20ft upon the hard roadway. Recent disclosures here show that guards are really required for the safety of Mr'Roosevelt. He has just emerged from the cane brakes and jungles of Mississippi, after hunting black bears there for five clays, and enjoying the rest afforded by camping out and eating opossum and bears' paws from a rough board. He conies out to learn of the confession of a converted Anarchist that three times his death has been: ordered, and that all three of the persons directed to assassinate him have shrunk from the awful task and committed suicide. The confession is made by Mrs Lena Dexhcimer. of Hoboken, the town opposite to New York, on the-New Jersey bank of the Hudson, which was the home of Bresci, the. Anarchist who assassinated the King of Inly. For years she was the friend of Emma. Goldman, the Anarchist agitator whose influence appears to have dominated Czolgosz, the murderer of President M'lvinley. Owing partly to the efforts of her husband, a worth}- man, Mrs Dexheimer recently was converted to Christianity, and joined a Methodist church in Hoboken, to whose pastor, the Rev Charles L. Meade, she confided the story of her experience, and her knowledge of the plots of the Anarchist groups with which she had been connected. Mr Meade at once gave the facts to the officers of the Secret Service, who have been guarding the woman to' shield her from the threatened assaults of her former associates. The most prominent assertions in her long statement are these. She received notice 0 in the Anarchist cypher, she says, that a Frenchman named Melos had been selected to kill President Roosevelt in November, ISOI. This man arrived in New York, and she dissuaded him from his purpose. But he knew that his own life would be forfeited, and after his return to France he killed himself in Paris. By lot another was chosen, oho Mueller, or Miller', living in this city. He also committed suicide. The third person selected to assassinate Mr Roosevelt was' a Mrs Shrocder, who killed herself, the woman says, in this city or* S'ept. 2 last. After this failure the Anarchists suspected Mrs Dexheimer of treachery,'placed spies about her, and sent to her threatening letters. These were in their cypher, but she had the Anarchist code, and they were translated by the Rev Mr Meade for'the use of the Secret Service. ; Now, much of this statement has been corroborated bv investigation. For -example, a Mrs Shroeder did commit suicide here on Sept. 2, and she left a trunkful of Anarchist documents. Besides, it is truethat Mrs. Dexheimer had the Anarchist, cypher code, and gave it to the Secret Service officers. Her assertion that there are thousands of Anarchists in Hoboken and the neighbouring manufacturing city of Paterson (in both of which Bresci and his associates lived) is not surprising, but there is something disquieting in what she, says about the number of these fiends who reside In this city. Tims far her story has not been disproved, and it appears to be true. We may be sure that the guards attending the President will not be withdrawn.
