LYTTELTON REGATTA.
The well-known yacht Waitangi, belonging to Mr G. Jorgenson, was to have left Wellington last evening for Lyttelton, in charge of J. M’Lean, in order to compete in the First-class. Yacht Race in the Lyttelton Regatta on New Year’s Day. The Regatta Committee has succeeded in obtaining a vessel of considerable size to be blown 'up by the submarine explosion on New Year's Day. They have secured for the purpose the hull of the steamer Jane, which in years gone by traded between Dunedin arid Port Chalmers, afterwards in Wellington Harbour, and later still between Lyttelton and the bays of Banks Peninsula. The vessel has been on the Harbour Board’s slip at Lyttelton for a long time, and on Monday was sold by auction by the Board “for rent.” Certain appurtenances realised £6, and the Lull of the old steamer was knocked down for a shilling (probably the lowest price ever paid for a vessel) to a representative of the' Board; It was then handed over to the Regatta Committee to bo destroyed by Captain Falconer’s mine.
