Councillor Smith said that the expenditure «ad been increasing rapidly, and if care was lot exercised the Council would find din'itultv in payiing its way. An application from E. Stewart an regard to connection with the sewer was referred to the Drainage Board. A let't'er of thanks- "from Captain Cclbeck, of the relief ship Morning, was received. The Citv Surveyor reported that as there was a stock of tar to work upon, good progress was being made in tarring the footpaths and a commencement had been made upon the streets; the work employed twenty-three extra "men. 'The footpaths were being tarred at the rate of 84 chains a day, at a cost of £l4 a mile. The following streets had been finished: —St ' Asaph, Cashel, Tuam, Lichfield and Here--1 ford Streets, from Belt to Belt, and Worcester Street from the West Belt, to Cathedral Square. • Portions of Durham, Armagh and Montreal Streets had been tarred, and this ,' -was costing 2d a. square yard, or £205 a mile. The daily consumption of tar was about 800 gallons. In low and wet places the "grass was growing very rapidly, and was' obstructing tho flow in the channels, preventing them from being kept in. a sanitary condition. To get that work done at %nce, he h-ad put on six extra men, -who iTOuldl finish the work in ,a few days. The -total number of extra hands at present was . trmenty-nine, and the works, upon which they were employed would be finished in a /few, weeks. Tho SurAyor appended a ■ Schedule showing how the men were allotted to various works on Dec. 10. ', The report was adopted. —'* The Sanitary Committee recommended, imong other things, that the report of the Duftrict Health Officer in regard to insanitary buildings should be adopted, and \rders issued that it should be given effect ho. " The committee had received only one tender for the nightsoil collection contract, ■which was higher than the present cost, and consequently was not recommended for acceptance. The committee had given' instructions to call for tenders for Oiorsing the waggons. The report was adopted. ■• . On the recommendation of the Works Committee, Messrs Triggs and Denton's tender for deg collars was accepted. The Council adjourned till Jan. 12.
