A RECORD. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. - (Received Dec. 14, 8.30 *p.m.) SYDNEY, Dec. 13. Cavill put up a new world’s swimming record for ia hundred yards, viz., 59sec.

The committee of the Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club met at the Clarendon Hotel on Friday night. Two new members were elected. The programme for the annual sports, to be held on Jan. 24, was drawn up. Mr Barker presented a prize of one guinea for a clothes race, to be swum on tue day, of the annual sports, and Mr Harrison 10s 6d for third prize in the Quartermile Handicap. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the donors. The Quartermile Handicap, to be swum in the estuary, was fixed for Feb. 28, it being the only vacant Saturday on which the tide suited. It was arranged that the Christmas Handicap (75yds) should be swum on Monday, Dec. 22.

The sub-committee appointed by the Canterbury Centre to inspect the proposed sites for the swimming sports on New Year’s Day went to Lyttelton on Saturday afternoon, and looked over the courses suggested by the Regatta Committee. It was found that it would be impossible to get a satisfactory course outside the dock, and it was unanimously agreed to recommend to the Centre that unless the dock could be secured for the sports it would not be advisable to 1 hold: them elsewhere. It was further resolved to ask the chairman of the Centre, Mr W. E. D. Bishop, to approach the Harbour Board with a view of gaining its permission to utilise the dock for the New Year’s Day sports. It was suggested that a flying squadron race could with advantage be added to the programme if the sports were held in the dock. .A committee meeting of the Sydenham Amateur Swimming Club was held on Friday evening; present—Messrs A. Russell (in the chair), Schneider, Brunsden, Hulbert, Howison, Hamilton, Gill, Olliver, Kent, Woodward and Sibhald. Correspondence from W. Wells, H. Mogridge and P. Squires was read and received. It was decided to post the names of several members as defaulters, and to strike off two names from the Club’s roll for sundry causes. The Dunedin A.S. Club wrote in reference to arrangements for the annual polo match, and forwarded programmes of sports to be held in Dunedin on Boxing Day and on Dec. 27. The following team was picked to represent the club in its annual match with Dunedin on Saturday, Dec. 27:—Goalkeeper, C. Schneider; three-quarters, P. W. Olliver, C. Kent; half-back, A. Brunsden; centre forward, J. C. K. Sibhald; forwards, R. E. Hall and Angus Russell. Emergencies, W. Howison, E. Gill, S. Cook and Pcryer. F. Bubb-wrote resigning membership, as he had left New Zealand. Mr H. E. Sherwood wrote promising a medal as /second prize in the junior competition. Tills was received with thanks. Accounts amounting to £2 3s 9d were passed for payment. The secretary’s action in having the bath cleaned and" whitewashed was approved. The treasurer reported that several members were in arrears with their subscriptions. It was decided to tiand the names to the Sports Protection Association to deal with. The Council wrote promising to regulate the water supply .more satisfactorily. The next distance of the Poryer medal competition was fixed to be swum off on Thursday, Jan. 28, and ,a 100yds handicap for Thursday, Jan. 21. It was • decided to bold the quarter-mile race on the estuary on Saturday. Feb. 28, in conjunction with the Christchurch Club. The East Christchurch Swimming Club held the. first distance (26yds) of the “Calvert” junior handicap race at its baths on Friday evening, with the following results —First heat—E. Fraser, 4soc, 1; S. Collins. 7se.c. 2. Time—2osec. Second heat—G. Arenas, 4scc, 1; J. Haggle Iseo, 2. Time —20 4-ssec. Third heat—E. Loader, 6sec, 1; F. Wauchop. 3sec, 2. Time—--22 4-ssec. Final heat—Fraser 1, Arenas 2. Wauchop 3. Time—2l l-ssec. Messrs 31. Dunn and V- Drake were the judges, Mr R. (L. Bush was the starter and Mr A. Calvert the handicapper. A committee meeting of the Sydenham Swimming Club was held on Friday; pxeMessrs A. M. Russell (chairman), C. Schneider, J. Sibhald, C. Kent, A. Brunsden, W. Howison, O! Gill, E. Hulbert, P. W. Olliver and F. IV. Woodward. Several new members were elected. The Secretary reported that the arrangements in connection with the visit of the water polo team to Dunedin were very satisfactory. It was decided to send a. team of ten men to Dunedin. Mr Sibbald was deputed to receive entries until to-day from inter-club swimmers. .
