FIRES.

[Per Press Association.!

NAPIER, Dec. 9. The Emerson Street fire was confined to three groups of buildings:—Messrs Williams Bros, painters; the Tyser Line offices and Mr A. H. Wilson’s ironmonger’s shop. The brigades did splendid work under very trying conditions, the fire being difficult to get at. Only tho back part of Mr Wilson’s shop was burnt, but the building had a narrow escape, the powder store being badly scorched. The insurances were: —Tyser Line building £I6OO, furniture £250, in the Phoenix Company; Messrs Williams Bros.’ buildings £7OO, in the New Zealand, the Commercial Union and the Imperial Companies, stock £1750, in the New Zealand, Manchester and Imperial Companies ; Mr A. H. Wilson’s building, £SOO, in the Royal Exchange Company, stock, £ISOO, in the Imperial Norwich Union and Sun Companies; Mr C. E. Walker £ furniture £IOO, in the Australian Alliance Company.

Just before bine o'clock yesterday morning an alarm was rung by the firebells at Lyttelton. The Fire Brigade promptly turned out, but it was not necessary to use their hose. The fire was in the roof of a shed at the back of the Bank of New Zealand, and was caused, it is supposed, by sparks from a small engine used for driving a circular saw on the adjoining premises. The fire hose at the Bank was found sufficient to extinguish the fire before serious damage was done.
