CONFERENCE OF OWNERS AND SEAMEN.

SYDNEY, Dec. 9.
A conference of the Steamship Owners Federation and the Federated Seamen’s Union has been opened "with, the object of framing a working agreement for the coming year. Under the existing agreement, entered into in June last, and which forms the basis of the conference, the Seamen’s Union bound themselves to accept a reduction of at least ten shillings per month provided that trade in the meantime had not improved, the reduction to date from the end of January next.
The Press was not admitted to the conference. The question at issue, whether trade conditions are such as to warrant the reduction, was discussed at great length. The conference adjourned to tomorrow. It is understood that there are prospects of amicable arrangements. -Mr Mills, of the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, was present.
