OBITUARY.

MR D. G., HOLMES. Mr David Gordon Holmes died at Holmeslie, Rakaia, on Wednesday night, aged sixty-seven, after a long illness. He was born in Ireland, and came out to Victoria, Fromi there he came to New Zealand about 1861, to supervise on behalf of Messrs Holmes and Richardson, the construction of the Lyttelton Tunnel. He remained ,with the firm until the railway line had been completed to Selwyn. After that, he entered into a partnership with his brother John Holmes, in acquiring land in the Rakaia and Methven districts, and on the dissolution of the partnership, returned to Holmeslie. He had been a member of the South Rakaia Road Board from the time of its incorporation. He married a daughter of the late Dr Deamer, and leaves a widow and eleven children. His funeral will take place on Saturday, leaving Holmesli© for the Rakaia cemetery at 2 p.m.
