VICTORIA DAY.
, CELEBRATIONS IN THE CITY. Saturday was the anniversary of the birth of the late Queen Victoria. From the appearance of . the city nobody would think that a few years ago the day was a public holiday and a day of celebrations. The town bore a aspect on Saturday. Flags were flying at half-mast on all the principal buildings, and several persons were noticed wearing a pretty little badge of red, white and blue, with a little black spot in the centre, out of respect to the memory of Queen Victoria. Several wreaths and bundles of flowers were placed on the foundation stone of the Jubilee memorial in A’ictoria Square. There was' no ceremony in connection with placing the flowers on. the stone, everybody was left to act on his or her own initiative. Dr Levingc, on behalf of the Canterbury War Fund Committee, cm Saturday morning placed a wreath on the foundation stone of the Jubilee memorial in Victoria Square, in memory of the fallen troopers in South Africa. LYTTELTON. The closed doors of the banks and a flag hoisted by a patriotic hotel-keeper were about the only visible signs of the observance of Victoria Day in J^yttelton.
