THE DESTRUCTOR.

The work of erecting the destructor will probably be commenced this week. All the machinery has arrived. Mr A. D. Dobson, City Surveyor, .'has reported to the City Council that Mr W. H. Bowen is making good progress with the erection of the buildings. ,■ The Works Committee reported to the City Council last evening that as the price in the tenders for the 150 ft shaft was much in excess of what had been anticipated, the committee had called for tenders for a shaft 100 ft high. Mr Bowen’s tender in each case was the lowest, and the committee recommended the Council to pass motions to enable it to accept Mr Bowen’s tender for 100 ft. The following were the three lowest tenders in each case: —lsoft—W. H. Bowen £1895, A. Swanston £I9BO, Graham and.Gre’g £1983 ; 100 f—t H. Bowen £1289, Moore Bros. £1335, Graham and Greig £1345. A great deal of discussion took place as to whether the shaft should be 100 or 150 feet high. Councillor R. M. Macdonald, Chairman of the Works Committee, moved that the report should be adopted. Councillor C. M. Gray moved as an amendment .that tenders for only a chimney 150 ft high should bo accepted. Councillor H. B. Sorensen seconded this. Councillor Macdonald said that the opinion of a competent authority on the subject should be obtained. Councillor' Gray’s amendment was carried by five votes to four. Councillor H. H. Loughnan then moved that further steps in regard to building the shaft should bo postponed until professional advice was obtained. Councillor Macdonald seconded this. It was stated that there was no local expert capable of giving an authoritative opinion. The amendment wa® negatived by five to four, and Councillor Gray’s amendment, which had become the substantive motion, was carried.
