A LICENSING CASE.
[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Sept ,30. George Payne, licensee of the Western Hotel, wa*. to-day - charged with Sunday trading. It appeared that at eight o’clock on the evening of Sept. 1 ia fireman from the Tarawera, which arrived in port shortly alter noon, was given liquor, after having stated that' he was a traveller, and had Just, arrived from Lyttol'toji. The Court informed the defendant that there were other points on which applicants for refreshment should be questioned 'than whether they were mere travellers. It was a startling proposition that the crew of a, ship arriving on Sunday could be served with drink in the evening, judgment would be given in writing. j t
