The report- of the. Friendly Societies presented to ths House of. Representatives this morning' states that the registrations during 1900 totalled! twenty-one, audi the registry of Jive 'branches which had ceased to exist was cancelled:. The Lodges for 1899 numbered 433, wiitlhi a membership 0f.38,202. The mortality of members of Friendly Societies is very light as compared with the general miortaftity of the colony. While this is a subject.for congratulation! to individual members, it oamaab be so regarded from a financial point of view, for the average sickness per member and the> risk both increase with age, and the additional average) expenditure on account of sick pay is likely to exceed the gain arising from deferred death claims "and the increased value of contnibution.::' According to the latest published statistics, the average capital per memoer in. each of the' Australasian jooiooues was: Colony. Number Members. Capital per Member.
