Fifty-five thousand] men are idle, and shipping business is parlaysed. Lord Kitchener reports that since July 22 the number of Boers killed is 24„ wounded 25, taken prisoners 223, surrendered 80. There have been largo captures of horses and cattle. Two -Boer commandoes have been surprised by British forces, and lost heavily. Sydney is now free from small-pox, the last patients having been discharged from quarantine. It is stated that the alleged Anarchist who arrived in Australia in the Ormus about the time of the Royal visit, was kept in quarantine and closely watched till he was released onJuly 25.
