Mr Alfred Kidd has been elected Mayor of Auckland by the City Council, in succession to Dr Campbell. Mr Ernest Purchase, master of the Greenstreet School, has been recommended by the committee for the position of second master of the Ashburton Borough School. Mr John G. Woolley, the Prohibition candidate for the Presidency of the United States at the recent election, arrived in Auckland by the San Francisco mail steamer yesterday. Last evening he addressed a large audience in the Baptist Tabernacle, Pastor Clarke presiding. Mr Woodley dealt with the subject of Christian citizenship jai the liguor traffic. ■
Ho received a splendid reception, and the greatest enthusiasm prevailed. Tho Hons E. C. J. Stevens and G. M’Lean. and Dr M’Lean were passengers fot Wellington by the s.s. Tara-wera yesterday evening. The Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr T. C. Field, and the town clerk, Mr G. A. Lcwin, left for Wellington last night by the s.s. Tarawera. Tho R,ev Charles William, M.A., of Accrington, a prominent preacher and lecturer, arrived at Auckland yesterday. He will visit the chief towns in the colony.
