POLITICAL NOTES.

[From Coe Special Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, July 18.

THE ELECTIVE EXECUTIVE

In order to prevent a direct vote being taken on the question of the Elective Executive, the opponents of the measure mono-' polised the debate up to the supper hour last night. Then the supporters of the Bill, recognising that the adjournment _of the debate would be certain to be carried after midnight, took a hand in the discussion. The measure is now as dead as Caesar’s ghost, so far as the present session is concerned. Many members who are pledged to the Bill! welcomed the opportunity afforded them of voting in favour _of the adjournment. The Government whips claim a majority. Had a straight-out vote been taken, they would have actively canvassed the House and put pressure on their party supporters to oppose the measure. CHAIRMEN OP COMMITTEES. Chairmen of Select Committees were appointed as follow to-day Public Accounts, Mr Pisher; Labour Bills, Mr Millar; Goldfields, Mr Jackson Palmer; Statutes Revision, Mr Napier. RANGIORA RAILWAY STATION. 'Mr Buddo to-day interviewed the railway authorities regarding the lighting of the Rangiora railway station at the arrival of the evening trains, which has been a local grievance for some time. A report is to be prepared with a view of remedying the trouble passengers have in this respect.
