EMPLOYMENT OF LASCARS.
THE ACTION OF THE fQßlfesg STEAMSHIP COMPAN.tr United Press Association — By Eleotrio Telegraph—-Copyrigh t.
SYDNEY, July - 18.
The employment of Lascars on the Omni does not necessarily mean that the practice will be generally followed throughout the Orient Company’s fleet. The Omrah belongs to the Naval Reserve, and is compelled to carry a minimum number of British sailors. The company was unable to get the requisite number to take the vessel to sea, and Scandinavians were engaged, but this was objected to, and Lascars, who are -British subjects, were therefore engaged. If the white British sailor is not more amenable to discipline, it is likely that Lascars will take his place on board the company’s ships.
