Tarawera from Wellington at 7 a.m., and the s.s. Upolu from Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth at 8.15 a.m. . The schooner Morning Light sawed for Waitapu at 040 a.m,*, and the schooner Falcon for Havelock at 9.50 a.m. yesterday. The ship Machrihatiish, 1641 tons, has been chartered to convey general cargo from a New Zealand port to the United Kingdom or the Comment, ■ • The torpedo l boat destroyer'Sprightly, hunt ■by Messrs Laird Bros., Birkenhead, for the British Government, has been given steam trials. A mean speed of 30.203 knots an- hour was maintained on six runs over the measured mile, and 80.03 knots an hour on three h° UT s continuous steaming. Among the many reports felling of the steady decline of trade, it is_ encouraging to learn that the British shipbuilding industry continues to ho well employed. January last reported a small failing-off of the last quarter c>f the year as compared with the corresponding quarter of 1899. But at the end ot the first quarter of this year (March. 31) the gross tonnage under construction was about 83,000 teas in excess of that on the corresponding dare of 1900, the increase being entirely in steamer steel tonnage, there being a falling-off pf more than 9000 tons in iron -tonnage, and 2000 tons in sailing tonnage. It would not be stretching the truth very greatly to say that the only .craft 'built are steol steamships, as these represent more than 99' per cent of the total under, construction. At present 1,293,071 gross tons are in hand, representing 410 vessels, all these figures taking no account of warships. '"During the past quarter there have been commenced 144 steam vessels, of 374,662 gross tons, and there have been launched 110 vessels of 267,717 tons. The a.s. Cygnet will run a special trip to Little Akaloa and La Boa’s Ray to-day, hut will not go to Akaroa. The schooner Lily, now duo from Greymouth, -with timber, is to -load produce for that port. The schooner Joseph Sims is to load produce for Wellington, and to go thence to Kaipara, and take timber back to Wellington. The ketch Emma Sima, due from Co!lingwood, is to load timber for Wanganui. All these vessels are on account of Messrs Pitcaithly and Co. The s.s. Upolu left for southern ports at 1 p.m. yesterday. The -5.3. Taieri arrived from Westport at 8.35 p.m. yesterday. The s.s.
