MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

A meeting of the members of the St Albans Library was held on Monday evening, Mr J. Moore presiding. The annual report and balance-.sheet were presented. These showed that the finances of the library were in a fairly satisfactory condition. The total receipts were, including balance from last year, £155 4s sd, expenditure £l4B Is 9d, leaving a small balance in hand. The bulk of the money was expended in improving and renovating the building, and the purchase of a bagatelle table. Thirty volumes presented by Mr T. H. Davey (Mayor of St Albans), and sixty volumes purchased by the committee, were added to the library during the year. The election of officers and committee resulted as follows; —President, Mr J. Moore; vice-president, Mr J. Beattie ; lion vice-presidenls, Messrs H. Forwoad, T. H. Davey, A. E. G. Rhodes, W. W. Collins, M.H.R.,, and G. J. Smith; secretary, Mr J. Jowsey; treasurer, Mr L. Elerig; committee of management, Messrs J. Harvey, Vincent, Mullins, Allan, Knight, and Webster ; librarian, Mr W. Hathaway.

At the fortnightly meeting of the Bud of Hoj>e Lodge, U.A.0.D., held at Rangiora, on Monday evening, D.P. Bro D. M’Kay, installed the elected officers as follows;—A.D., Bro H. D. Bettger; V. Bro F. W. Pre-ddy; Secretary, Bro J. J. Wilson; Treasurer, Bro J. Sutcliffe ; A.D. liar els, Bros A. Thompson and- R. Jetfs; V.A. Bards, Bros G. VV. Smith and W. C'adman;. 0.G., ' Bro 0. Rumbles; J.P.A., Bro.T. Taylor. It was decided to try to arrange 1 for social evenings every other lodge meeting. Bro Preddy was elected secretary of the Juvenile Lodge in place of Bro W. Evans, resigned. There was a large attendance at the ordinary meeting of the Rangiora Literary and Debating Society, on Monday evening. The Rev F. P. Fendall presided. The evening was taken up with a specially interesting paper by Mr T. R. Cresswell, M.A., on the subject, “Did Bacon write Shakspere’s Plays?” After a discussion on the paper the contributor was accorded a hearty vote* of thanks. The usual meeting of the committee of tne Children’s Aid Society was held on Thursday evening, in the wiiy Goiir, c.. Chambers. The Rev A. C. Hoggins presided. A number of cases in Christchurch and Lyttelton were dealt with, and in connection with the cases in Lyttelton, it was decided that a n effort should be made to commence a branch of rhe- Society in Lyttelton. A special meeting of the committee was arranged for -Thursday,, July 18, to receive the annual report. It was decided to hold the annual meeting on Anrust 1, and to ask the Mayor, Mr A. E. Rhodes, to preside. The usual weekly meeting of the Christchurch Prohibition League was held on Friday. At the invitation of the General Committee, a number of delegates from the various' Temperance and Christian Endeavour Societies were- present, and a band of workers was organised in order to carryout a house-to-house canvass in connection wit.. Mr J. G. Woolley's mission in Aucnist. The sub-committee reported that the°Canterbury Hall had been taken.-for the meetings, and that it was proposed to give Mr Woolley a public reception. , A communication was received from the New Zealand Temperance Alliance, stating that the services of Miss Florence Balgarnie had been secured for a seven months’ campaign in ISO2V The fortnightly meeting of the Lyttelton United Band of Hope was held in -the Wesleyan Schoolroom, Lyttelton, on Tuesday evening. There was a large attendance. The Rev I). M’Nicoll presided. The programme consisted of songs and recitations by the younger members, a song by .Miss Clark, a recitation by Miss M’Auliffe, and a temperance dialogue, entitled “ All for the best,” rendered by the senior members. The half-yearly “social” of t-ho LowerHigh Street Christian Endeavour Society Was held on Tuesday evening in the schoolroom. There was a good altepdancs of members and visitors. A good programme was provided, and after an address by Mr STanan, light refreshments were handed ro\t'd. A special general meeting of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association of Canterbury was held yesterday afternoon. 1 hero was a large and representative attentiance. The business was quickly disposed of, and the meeting adjourned. The remainder of the evening was spent in a progressive euchre match and about an hour’s dancing. Refreshments were provided by the ladies. There was an attendance of over 'sixty, and the prizes at the euchre match were won by Bro J. N. Du Feu and Miss A. Walker, and Mrs W. Newton and Bro F. H. Dodd.'
