THE QUESTION OF DEHORNING.
A very good instance of the necessity of dehorning cattle was presented at the Aldington stock market yesterday, in the shape of a cow which had been gored by .■another beast. The cow was the property O'f Mr H. Arres, who gave £8 10s for her nt Rangiora on Tuesday. Yesterday moraine- the was put into a railway truck with some- other cattle, to be token to Addington, and in releasing her from the truck it was found that she had' a most frightful wound, which extended from just behind the forearm for a distance of over 18in. The horn bad gone right through, the skin and flesh, to a depth of a couple of inches, and the poor animal presented ' a pitiful sight. She was immediately taken away to be killed. Several bullocks which, , were in the yards also showed bad gores, ' which deteriorated from their selling price as beef. The opinion was freely expressed ! at the vards yesterday that, in the interests o'f the beasts themselves dehorning I should be made compulsory. Scarcely a I week passes but some cattle come in show--1 ing of injury, but the cow which, 1 was injurad yesterday is probably one of the worst cases ever seen.
