The debate was desultory. Lord Salisbury announced the proposed Bill to deal with the subject. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, June 10. A largely attended public meeting of ■Protestants was held in the 'Choral Hall to-night. -The Rev James Gibb moved—- " That this meeting protests against any alteration being made in the form of the Coronation oath attd declaration of Sovereigns of 'Great Britain, on the grounds that by the Act of Settlement it is decreed that the Sovei-s;gn of these realms shall be of the Protestant faith, that the aggressive aims and attitude of the Roman Catholic Church are such that it is necessary that there shall be no relaxation) oi •tne safeguards which ensure the continuance of ibh© 'Protesta ; nt succession, that as the Roman Catholic doctrine of mental reservation permits oaths to be .taken- in other than their generally accepted meaning, it is incumbent on the Sovereign to make his declaration in terms that are not capable of being token in any other than their ordinary 'and obvious meaning, and to declare his adhesion to the Protestant ifaifh in terms that cannot be misunderstood." The motion was seconded by the Rev T, G. Brooke (Wesleyan), and carried enthusiastically, as also Was the following, proposed by Mr C. Watt and seconded by the'Rev J." Wilson:—" j.nab this meeting recognising the'-gravity of tho present crisis, emphatically protests against any modification of the Coronation oath without a -plebiscite 'of the electors of Australasia being first taken, and that a copy of the resolution be forwarded to the Governor."
