THE BY-ELECTION.

A meeting of the executive of MrGharles Taylor’s election committee was held last evening. Members reported that interest in the election was becoming keener. Final arrangements were made for the meeting at the Canterbury Hall on Wednesday evening. '

Mr A. H. Turnbull’s friends and supporters are asked to attend a meeting to be held in the Chamber of Commerce at 7.30 to-morrow might. (Mr G. J. Smith asks all his friends aud supporters to meet him at the Methodist schoolroom, Setiwya Street, this evening, at 8 o’clock, and at the State school, Waltnam, on Wednesday evening, also at 8 o’clock.

A meeting of the supporters of Mr G. J. Smith waiS held in the Druid’s Hall, Colombo Street, Sydenham, last night, when there was a large gathering. Councillor Hadfield was voted to the chair. Mr Smith explained to the meeting why he had consented to contest the seat vacated by Mr C. 'Lewis. He heartily approved of the abolition of canvassing, and had asked them to meet him so that be might talk certain matters over, and arrange for the working of the district. The meeting decided to form itself into a committee, and) to do its Utmost to secure Mr Smith’s return. Councillor Hadfield was elected chairman of the committee; and Mr T. F. Murray secretary!
