FIRES.

Shortly after three o’clock on Saturday afternoon an alarm of fire was given in the city, and the appearance of a column of smoke in the direction, of Sydenham seemed ’’to indicate a fire of some magnitude. The brigades were soon on ° the way to the scene, when it was found that some stables and loose-boxes, the property of Mr Lawrence Howard, cab proprietor, were blazing. The stabling, which covered a considerable space of ground, at the back of a Tine of shops on the eastern side of Colombo Street, was completely burnt out, but luckily there were no horses in at the time. When the brigades arrived the fire was quickly subdued, bid; 1 the building generally was wrecked. There was no insurance.
