PRESENTATIONS.
The householders and friends of Mis* Riordan, lately mistress of the Baloaim school, met in the schoolroom on Friday night fox the purpose of Showing in • practical ioxjn their appreciation Of h«n services to-the school'. The meeting too!} the form of a “social,” and during the evening Mr John’: Fitirpatricb, on behalf of the householders, presented Miss Riordan with a beautifui gold chain and locket, and expressed regret that Miss Riordan’s valuable services had to be dispensed with, owing to the small attendance; but hf, trusted that their loss would be'her gain! Miss Riordan thanked the householders for the gift, which would always remind her of the pleasant time she had spent amongst them..: ,
At the Occidental Hotel on Saturday evening Mr J. Bayne, who has for seven and a half yeans been director of Lincoln 'Agricultural College, was entertained by a number of his friends. Mir H. Andereon, Prebbleton, in the name of the sub--Ecnbers, in a complimentary speech, jaw sec ted Mr Bayne with a handsome gold; albeft and pendant, as well as a sovereign case, ond conveyed to him the best wishefj of Ms. friends. .Mr Bayne lacknowiedge*. - tho presentation in suitable terms. Friday evening wag the occasion of sfi very pleasant gathering at the Woolston School. The cxmimittee, teaching staff and other 'friends met to present a handsome >oak writing cabinet to Mr Thomas who for seven years had been one of tha assistant mastery . and'.who was 1 now leav-> in g to 'take the - mastership of the Brookside School. Mr Gleworth, chairman of th.,f committee, in snaking ~ the - ■ presentation J spoke, at some length' on the conscientiousness and consideration with which Mr Douda had always carried out his duties, and of tha high esteem,in which he was held by all who know him. He regretted tho loss the school must sustain in los- ' ing tiie services of a teacher who had always made, the future welfare of his pupils his chief concernbut ho was glad to 'bo able to congratulate him on his wellearned promotion, Mr Laurensou, member for Lyttelton, endorsed the Chairman-# remarks, adding .that he had known Mr ponds for about, five years when teaching ■in the Lyttelton schools, and couldl not ' speak too highly of his character or worth as a teacher. The Rev W. J. Cow, Mr Thomas (Mayor of Woolston), both mem- -- bers of the committee, and Mr J. Richardson (an ex-member of the committee and ex-Mayor of Woolston), each spoke in the same strain. The recipient, in responding, said that much of what success he may have achieved, was, in no small measure due to the happy relationship which existed between the committee and teachers. After the presentation was made, refreshments were handed round.' During the evening musical Stems were contributed by Misses Offwood, pianoforte duet; Mbs Carton, song; Hr MfDxarmid aad Mr Douds, songs; and Mr A, Jamieson,-vio-lin solo.
