A SERIOUS CHARGE.
[Pee Peess Association.] AUCKLAND, June 19.
Tire hearing of the charge of attempted poisoning against Emil -Berger was continued at tho Police Court to-day. Dr James Dalziel said that be was called on June 6 last to go bo accused’s house. Mrs Berger was very weak. Sho told witness that I her husband had been giving her medicine which had a peculiar effect upon her mouth and throat, and caused other effects on her system! From what she told him witness formed the opinion that she was suffering from an overdose of aconite. ’A bottle was produced, and taken possession of, by the police.- Witness said to accused, “Your wife has been very ill. Have you given her anything?” Accused answered, “No.” Witness then said, “Have you not given her any medicine?” Accused replied, “ Oh, yes. There’s a bottle on the shelf there.”' The constable showed accused tho bottle,, and accused said, “ Yes, that is. the bottle.” Accused was quite ready to admit giving the medicine, but he did not want to say too much about it. He had not been formally accused at the time, but he: know the constable was there. At this stage -the case was adjourned till Tuesday.,. ’
