MINING.

' [Peh Press Association.] ATJiCKI/AKID, June 17. It is .stated that a reef, three feet wide, the richest ever worked in the district, has been discovered in Hardy’s Premier Minos, Waiorbngomal, Te Aroha. This may prove a find of [ho utmost importance to 'tho Te Aroha district, as there are plenty of reefs about, but hitherto the comparative .absence of any really rich discoveries has served to chock anything like systematic prospecting. WEST COAST NOTES. FFrom Otra Correspondent.] GREYMOUTH, June 17. Dredging returns—Pactolua 250 z 14dwt for 117 hours, Ford’s Creek 21oz Idwt for IG3 hours, Maori Queen Boz B|dwt for 112 hours, Waipuna 9oz for 160 hours, Grey River 40oz lOdwt for 120 hours, Leviathan 430 z lOdwt for 115 hours. ■ „ There.was no wash-up of the Now River, Duller Junction and Greenstone Junction dredges. . . The Pactolus return shows a slight increase on that of last week. In the material being ■treated is a large percentage oi failings, and when this is got rid of the returns should be materially increased. J , . The Nelson Creek return is not to hand, bub will be about 350 z. Tho Duller Junction only started working again on Friday morning, consequently there was no wash-up. The Ford’s Creek return is sh© best on© this dredge has yet obtained. The wash is improving. ' . .. The Maori Queen return is disappointing. A larger dredge would have been advantageous. The Leviathan return was up to expectations. The dredge is in solid wash and should give a better return this week. The New River dtedge is on good wash and about 250 z is expected this week. The Grey River return is encouraging. The dredge is now operating near where the big yields were obtained. I believe that this company is again oii the up grade and for a few weeks will get good returns. The Waipuna return is an improvement on the last. The wash is improving and a fair return may be expected for this week. The repairs to the Greenstone Junction dredge a;e progressing satisfactorily. The dredge is expected to start about the end of the week. The Greenstone Creek dredge’s machinery is working smoothly. The dredge is reported to be on good gold. The following additional returns have been

reported during the day:—Nelson Creek 320 z for 128 hours, Mokoia SOoz for 120 hours, Greenstone Creek lloz , for 113 hours. The tributes to Craig’s Freehold report the following for last week:—Chesieiman and party ISoz 4dwt, Goodie and< party 7oz 14dwt. It is probable that the Nelson Creek, and Pactolus dredges will close down this week for repairs. The former will also have a new screen fitted in. The Grey Consolidated did not wash up. The dredge is now working three shifts, and is running smoothly. Grey Eiver started working again this morning on an improving wash. The Totam dredge, which sunk about a fortnight ago, has bean refloated and worked during part of last week. The Ross Day Dawn contractors have been much, hampered by bad weather. The pontoon deck will be finished in another week. The work of erecting the machinery on the North Beach claim is being pushed on, and tbo dredge should have a trial run by August. A quantity of buckets and other dredging material has been carted cut to MaxscLen No. 8 claim during the week. The dredge should Lave a trial run in about si* weeks. THE MOSQUITO DREDGING CLAIM. The fallacy of taking one bore as a test of a claim has been illustrated by the boring of the Mosquito Gold Dredging Company’s r-tem.

for the first bore proved worthless, but the rest produced splendid results. 'The follow-. ing axe the tests returned by Messrs Cutten Bros., the engineers:—No. I—Test, at top end of clearing, passed through 3ft 6in of clayey silt, thence through 21ft of loose gravel on to old man formation bottom. Total depth, 24ft Gin; contexts of bore, 769.5 cubic inches. Gold result, .007 grains, or equal to .424 grains per cubic yard. The poorness of f this result may be accounted for by the looseness of the gravels, the situation may formerly have been an eddy. No. 2—Test, about five chains above centre of the area, passed through sft of loose drift and pug, then through 15ft of fairly loose light gravels on to a soft sandstone bottom. Total depth, 20ft; contents of bore, 810 cubio inches. Gold result, .41 grains, or equal to 23.616 grains per cubic yard. No. B—Twenty chains from top boundary, passed through sft of loose drift, then Bft of nice-looking wash, then lift of loam wash on to a soft sandstone; bottom. Total depth, 24ft; contents of bore, 972 cubio inches. Gold results, .23 grains, or equal to 11.04 grains per cubio yard. No. 4—About 1J chains from lower boundary, passed through 21ft of light gravel, from grass to old man formation bottom. Contents of bore, 810 cubio inches. Gold result, .11 grains or equal to 6.SS grains per cubic yard. No. S About five chains from, bottom boundary and four chains from right-hand terrace, in bed of Email creek, supposed run of back lead feeding main creek,, passed through 2Sft of gravel, from grass to old man formation bottom. Contents of bore, 1184 cubio inches. Gold result; .48 grainy or equal to 17.68 grains per cubic yard.
