TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.
A special meeting of . the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council was held in the Trades Hall (Ingli/ Buildings) on Saturday. Mr J. A. M’Cullough (president) who wae in the chair, explained that the meeting had been called for -the purpose of considering what action should be taken in the byelection. About forty delegates were present. It was resolved that the Council considers it advisable to select a Labour candidate for the coming by-election, and, owing, to the time being limited, that each member of the Council should receive a ballot paper for the purpose of selecting a candidate, the ballot to close on Thursday next, at a special meeting of the Council. Three nominations have been received, amid will be submitted to ballot. It was deedded to request all Unions to support the nomination of Mr Walter Newton as the workers’ representative on the Conciliation Board. The action of the Retailers’ Section of the Employers’ Association in recommending that retailers should keep shops open on two nights next week was discussed, ’ and the following resolution was carried: —“That this Council regrets that the Retailers’ Section of the Employers’ Association have recommended to increase, t-hb late hours already worked by shop assistants by working two late nights next week, trusts that the Association will reconsider it-s action, and urges all workers to refrain from purchasing on Saturday night next/; ■ ■
