BOROUGH COUNCILS.
LYTTEfLTON, An ordinary meeting of the Lybfcelton Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening; present—the 'Mayor (Mr T. C. Field), 'Councillors Rad'cliffe, Ealami', Webb, LaurensooD, Kay, Gruhfo, Whitley and Brown. A letter was received (from the Bev E. E. 'Chambers stating that 1000" sheep landed from the s*s. Toroa, on Tuesday afternoon wete allowed to remain in the pens on the western breakwater without food till Wednesday morning. Councillor Rad'cliffe said tuat the point was to ascertain who was responsible. He thought that a depot of food should !be established for sheep which had to wait before being driven away. He imoved—" That the attention of the police and' of the Society for the Prevention' of Uruelty to Animals be called.to the matter." The Diction was carried unanimously. A letter was read from Mr W. Austin complaining that a fowl-house had been erected on the premises l of the Mitre Hotel, against his fence. - The Inspector reported that the recently-arrived licensee of the hotel had erected the fowlhouse, in ignorance of the borough hy-law forbidding it, and had promised to remove it. It was agreed to grant the free use of the Colonists' QBMI for a lecture on Indian Missions, by Miss Harband, and to grant .the patronage of the Council for the occasion. The report of the Finance Committee Btated that the receipts since last'meeting had been £65 13s od, and recommended payment of accounts amounting to £194 6s .7d. The overdraft was reported as £5425 . 10s, and the amount paid on account. of loan £5441 4s 7d. The report Was adopted. The report of the Foreman of Works was adopted. ; The Fire Prevention and Estates Committee reported with reference to the sites offered for the proposed new fire brigade station, recommending that the station should be erected on the' site of the present one. The report was adopted. The motion, passed at a previous meeting, .striking a rate of Is 3d in the £ for the ensuing year, was confirmed. The Bank of New Zealand was appointed the bank at which the district fund account of the borough should be kept: It was decided that the Mayor's honorarium for the. ensuing year should be £IOO. After some routine business the Mayor said that as the present ,-was the last meeting before the municipal elections he wished to thank the members of the Council for the courtesy and assistance accorded to him during l his term of office. Councillor Webb, as the senior councillor, reciprocated his Councillor Ealam, as" junior^councillor. l Councillors Qrubb and Laurenson also spoke. A" vote of thanks to the staff was passed and ordered to be recorded on the minutes. -The meeting then closed.
