DUNEDIN ITEMS.

[From Our Correspondent.] DUNEDIN, April 18. ' B is'not often that the Dunedin City Council sot up their opinion against that of their- law advisers, but such a course was taken at last night's meeting, and it seems to mo that common sense was entirely on their' side. When the Council met Mr Joseph Braithwaite, who on his nomination for High Ward 'had been declared elected a member of tihe Council for the year commencing on the last in April, claimed to be-entitled to take his seat forthwith; in the present Council, and the Mayor stated that this was in -i-ccord-ance with- the opinion of the city solicitor. It was pointed out to Mr Braithwaite that Councillor Dawson was still a member for High Ward-, and as four councillors would be beyond the statutory number allowed by law, the newly-elected member decided to act on the advice, of (members of the Council in preference to that of the Corporation solicitor, and.retired from the Chamber. Had ihe insisted' on his right to sit and vote, curious complications might have arisen.

Roberts, Buller, Wldce, Kitchener and French are tihe names assigned to the newly (reclaimed streets on the Harbour Board's ground near the Tongue Wharf. The Education Board has placed on record its pleasure that one of its members,. Mr T. M'Kenzie, ihad beem appointed on the Teachers' Salaries' Commission. This gentleman and (Mr W. Davidson, another member of the Commission, will leave for Wellington to-morrow. Mr Harry L. James, secretary of the Tahuna Park Trotting Club, received a surprise present this morning in the shape of a silver fruit dish and inkstand, accompanied by a letter signed simply "Your Canterbury trotting friends," in which it is intimated that the gifts were intended "as some' slight token of our appreciation ■otf your manjr kindnesses and civility extended to the trotting enthusiasts of Canterbury who were present at the last meeting of the Tahuna Park Trotting Club." Needless to say Mr James is very much pleased both with'the gifts and the nice way the presentation was made.
