MUNICIPAL POLITICS.
RESOLUTIONS BY THE SOCIALIST CHURCH. At the last two meetings of the Socialist Church municipal politics have been under consideration. Resolutions were passed complimenting the Trades and Labour Council, and the Burgesses' Association on the programmes issued by them, and wishing them success in.'their efforts to arouse public interest in the approaching elections. '• The following resolutions with reference to local matters also were approved:— "That in the absence of State action in this direction local governing bodies should take the necessary steps to . acquire all lands and buildings within their jurisdiction." " That local bodies should at o nce erect dwelling houses fitted with all modern improvements to be let at rentals covering cost of construction and maintenance." "That a Municipal Health Department should be established." "That free hospital accommodation, medical advice, nursing and medicine should be provided through the local authorities for all applicants." " That municipal markets for all produce should be established at once." "That municipal bakeries should be established, also municipal baths and' laundries." "That all public services, such as gas works, tramways, etc., should be made public property, and be administered by the local councils." "That a high-pressure water supply should be provided for Ohristchurch and suburbs." " That the private contract system for the construction of local works should be abolished, and the work done through the direct employment of labour by the local councils." " That the City of Christchurch and. the surrounding boroughs should be consolidated under one local governing body."
