MISS ALICE BARNETT. United Press Association—By JEl'ectria Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, April 16. The death is announced cf Miss Alice Barnett, the contralto operatic singer. '. (Miss Alice Barnett visited New Zealand in the early part of 1387, with Williamson's Royal Comic Opera Company, when the company produced "The Mikado," "lolanthe/' "The Parates of Penzance" and "Patience." .Elsa May was the prima donna of the company, which included Vernon, Woodfield, Brenner add Wallace.)
There are many -people in Christchurch and, indeed, in the whole of the colony, who will learn with regret «f the death of Mr Harry Franks. He passed away at Sydney on April 1 at the age of forty-eight. The Sydney "Daily Telegraph" states that by his death the printing trade has lost one of its best-known members. The late Mr Franks wa-s an authority on every branch of the printer's art, and was a shrewd business man, with a personality which made him exceedingly popular. . He was founder of the Master Printers' Association in New South Wales, and, in another direction, turned his energies to the establishment of printers' criqket clubs. He was born at Richmond, in Victoria, and entered upon his career as an apprentice to Messrs Sands and M'Dougall, of Melbourne. In recent years he became the Australasian'agent for the American Linotype machine, which he introduced into a large number of newspaper offices in the colonies.
Mrs Archer, wife of Mr Francis Archer, Cheviot County clerk, -.died on Saturday evening, after a 'few days' illness. ' The deceased lady will 'b& much .missed for her many acts of kindness. Her funeral took place on Monday, and was one of 'the largest ever seen in- the district.
