THE COMING CENSES.
SOME INTERESTING DETAILS. [By Orn 'Speciai, Rei-oeteb.J The Registrar-General’s official .staff has. been busy for a long time in “jibs biggest wooden building in the world ” in- the work! of dividing the colony into suitable . dis-’ tricts for the work of the various enumera-| tors of the census. This has necessitated; the preparation of a very large number, of maps in detail, which have been drafted inthe Lands and Survey Department. Some idea of the magnitude of the work’; . of an enumerator has been gained in a short' interview with Mr L. 0. WiHiams, whose; duties extend over /the counties of Selwyn' and Aharon and the -boroughs in those dis-j tricts. On him the responsibility devolves; of subdividing ' these districts into soil many sub-districts as will permit of _ the' sub-enumerators getting their return's in to' him as soon after Sunday, March 31, as' possible. . ; ■ The County of Selwyn, the.-City oil Christchurch, the boroughs of Sydenham,; St Albans, Linwood, New Brighton, Sum-| ner and Lyttelton, and the town district' of Sonthbridge are divided into eighty-two; sub-districts. Each sub-enumerator is pro-, vided with a map of his district, a copy of general instructions,; a guide to sub-enu-; merators, and a book in which to enter the! names of the householders with whom ho has, left schedules. “The Guide ’’.is teutons document, and is much more am-', plified than it has bean on previous ce-' cas.ions. Tire sub-enumerator Iras to supply the names and addresses of each mannfac-; turer, besides those of many traders '.within' his district. It is the subsequent duty ofj the enumerator to communicate with each; of these with a view bo- gaining particulars’ of the class of industry or trade pursued,; number of.hands employed, class of machinery used, details as to lighting, and so on.
: : The schedule contains "the ; titles ’ of,; ] 2<Wj : known industries, ranging from “condensed! milk factories” to “tombstone manufactories.” ■ /!.. - r ■' '■ t '..V-! ; ’■! MSts"
To give an idea, of the country, which' some of the sub-enumerators in Canterbury have to traverse (mostly twice) in the exe-j cution of their respective duties, it may bo mentioned that one of them, the Hake Cole*’ a ridge Road District, measures seventy miles,, by twenty, whilst twenty miles by twenty, is a very fair' average size for the out hung’ ;mb-enumerators’ districts. The County of Akaroa is simplicity itself, as it only requires to ,be "divided ''into den,' ,;^atura^y, ; ritli6::;vysrl£i|{)lii ■.urns' arc- in will be an aivUmuK one. and it :nav ho mentioned 1 in this connection thjßt
